Embratel had enjoyed a monopoly on long-distance calls in Brazil, but regulatory changes brought in competition that threatened to undermine its market. By aggressively responding with an NGN solution from Huawei, Embratel turned around a bleak picture and returned to market dominance.

Founded in 1976, Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat) is the leading full-service provider in the UAE. Etisalat has set up high quality telecom networks providing innovative and reliable telecom services for the Middle East and other regions in the world. In recent years, Etisalat shifts its focus to oversea markets. It has successfully run networks in countries outside the UAE, like Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Tanzania, and Egypt. Etisalat won Egypt's third mobile license. In April 2007, it launched the first 3.5G network and achieved bursting development.

Pakistan has a very large and widely dispersed population of 173 million people. Its mobile penetration is less than 25%, which indicates huge growth potential. As the third largest mobile operator in Pakistan, Telenor needed to have the capacity to grow quickly and smoothly, but did not take the risk of buying excess capacity. They also wanted to ensure that the expensive long-haul transmission network was used effectively for voice traffic and not wasted on signaling, which was typical with their existing HLR system. The answer was a Huawei USC with its distributed architecture.

The initial service was expected to grow quickly, but it had to be deployed cost-effectively. Huawei was able to provide a core system that could be quickly implemented and grow easily, allowing Bakrie Telecom to succeed with their socially-conscious program.

This is a tall order, but with a technology edge and the help of Huawei, the Indicom brand became the fastest growing service in its first four years of service.
